About the Item

European midcentury design is generally characterized by simple, elegant forms that embraced timeless beauty with impeccable quality. The era marked a significant period for European Mid-Century Modern lighting design, often made with Industrial materials. This wall light is a prime example of this trend, featuring a sleek and Minimalist metal structure. While European Mid-Century Modern lighting design was largely inspired by the Bauhaus movement that emphasized the importance of function over form, mid-century modernism allowed “unnecessary” elements as well. The use of simple, geometric shapes and Industrial materials dominates the overall look of this wall lamp, however, the subtle decorative elements make it a unique piece. From the way the body is foxed to the wall, to the hanging shade, the design has an elegant airiness to it. The hanging opaque glass shade is accompanied by a black base and “hat” that are connected by three gold lacquered metal parts that pierce through the top, ending in small spheres. Caged by these golden additions, the light coming from the glass shade makes them shine brightly. Paired with the long tube, the shade stands out even more, pulling the focus. The rest of the design is not shorn of decorative elements either, which is especially apparent in the pronounced curve of the at the base of the tube. As it is followed by a long, straight line, it creates balance that shows the designer’s keen eye. The lacquered black finish of the wall light adds a touch of elegance to the structure, while also highlighting the contrasting golden parts. Mid-Century Modern lighting design from Europe continues to inspire contemporary lighting fixtures, with many designers drawing inspiration from this era's simple and unique designs.
