Börje Claes Brass Adjustable Wall Lamps for Norlett Elit, Sweden 1970s

About the Item

Swedish Modern, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter reaction to the earlier, more decorative design movements such as Art Deco. In comparison, as this pair of wall lamps demonstrates, the mid-century era brought streamlined modernism to Sweden as well. Börje Claes designed this polished brass wall lamp model with both table and floor lamp versions. In these wall lamp versions he combined a classical shape with carefully thought out proportions and Swedish craftsmanship. Similarly to the other versions, the necks’ characteristic curve holding the brass shades define this model. To accompany the defined curves, the backplates have a circular shape that mirrors the shape of the shade. The inside of the shade has a patinated metal look to enhance the light the lamp emits with a beautiful effect. While there is a clear attention on the design elements, functionality was of equal importance in the classic “Svensk design” manner, in which form must follow function in order for something to be considered ‘god design’ (sic.). As such, the lamps’ trumpet shades can be adjusted freely on the vertical axis through a so-called knee joint by the German company OMI. In line with the Functionalist trend of the time, the designer abandoned ornamentation in favour of form. Nonetheless, the warmth and beauty inherent in Swedish design is maintained, as well as high-quality craftsmanship provided by Swedish manufacturer, Norlett Elit. At its most basic level, mid-century modern designs are known for juxtaposing sleek lines with organic shapes, using new materials and methods to reimagine traditional pieces. These wall lamps are perfect examples of this with a modern look that isn’t a complete departure from the past. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass has a beautiful patina with some marks and discolouration. Dimensions: 9.84 in W x 14.17 in D x 12.2 in H 25 cm W x 36 cm D x 31 cm H About the designer: Börje Claes Sigge Claesson, born April 14, 1941 in Bredaryd, Jönköping County, grew up in Bredaryd and together with a brother took over his father's lighting factory, but after losing a major customer, the factory's time was over. Börje Claesson moved to Norrland to run companies in the lighting industry there. New lamp models, designed by Börje Claes, received attention in the international design press. Claesson was recruited in 1983 by Ikea to become the company's product manager and the family moved to Älmhult. Claesson remained at Ikea for five years and was promoted to assortment manager. He was then CEO of an industry in Vilhelmina. From 1994 he ran companies in the telephone directory industry. After bankruptcy in 1998, he started a telephone directory on the Internet, a successful investment that was right at the time and generated good profit when sold in 2004. He was thus able to acquire Kanal 10, where he himself also participates in the tv programs. Claesson has several companies and is the publisher of the magazine Inblick.
