Broken Glass Wall Lamp by Willem Van Oyen for Raak Amsterdam, 1960s This particularly beautiful wall lamp made of mirror glass and broken glass, The wall lamp still has its original sticker. Design by Willem Van Oyen from 1968 model number C1517 and made at Raak Amsterdam Raak was founded in 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn and is one of the most important Dutch lighting manufacturers of the 20th century. Before launching his company in Amsterdam, Lockhorn had worked on lighting the huge Philips building in Eindhoven (where he later opened a second Raak branch). Raak's tagline was “Illuminated Architecture” which gave the brand prestige in producing designs that integrate harmoniously with cutting-edge, high concept interiors. Raak's glass and metal, floor lamps, pendant lamps and wall lamps have an aesthetic that was both elegant and futuristic through high-quality materials with innovative shapes. In the 1960s Raak started to collaborate with the famous artist and glass manufacturer Willem van Oyen. Although the marriage between art and industry was common in the Netherlands (the lines between the creative professions were often blurred and many artists also worked as designers and vice versa), the results of Van Oyen's contributions Raak were far from common. Raak promoted Van Oyen's iconic, handmade Chartres Wall Lights (c.1964) as molten paintings. The series was inspired by the beautiful glass plates of Chartres Cathedral in France. Raak regularly collaborates with international designers and architects, including E. J. (Evert Jelle) Jelles, Sergio Asti, Bertrand Balas and Nanny Still. Two of Raak's most celebrated lamps are the cylindrical, metal fugue lamp by Maija-Liisa Komulainen (c.1970) and the super simple, Globe 2000 Floor Lamp by Frank Ligtelijn (1961). After its rapid success, the Globe 2000 was also produced as a hanging lamp and wall lamp. The minimalist design is an excellent example of Raak's signature style and has become a vintage classic. In 1974, Lockhorn sold the company, but remained director until 1977. In 1999 the company became part of the Center for Light Architecture in Drachten. The CLA regards light itself as a building material. Light determines the shape. without light no contrast without contrast no form. without form there is no space. Raak became one of the most important lighting companies of the post-war period and made a significant contribution to the 'Space Age' style of the 1960s and '70s. In Dutch, “raak” means “to hit” or “to hit the nail on the head.” Lighting company RAAK certainly accomplished that with its unique mid-century modern designs of futuristic, Space Age metal lamps, pendants and other lighting creations.

RAAK was founded in 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn (1923–2004), a former employee of the Philips Lighting company in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Under the tagline “Illuminated Architecture,” RAAK focused on producing elegant, sophisticated and modern lighting that would blend seamlessly with high-concept interiors.

During the 1960s, one of RAAK’s most well-known designs came from its in-house designer, Frank Ligtelijn, who created the Globe 2000 series of glass and chrome floor lamps, pendants and wall lights. Another key collaboration was with Dutch artist and glassmaker Willem van Oyen, who produced the iconic Chartres wall lights in 1964. Van Oyen’s Brutalist design evoked melted paintings and was inspired by the stained glass windows in the Chartres Cathedral in France.

In the 1970s, RAAK worked with several influential international artists, such as Italian designers Sergio Asti, Giotto Stoppino and Cesare Casati and Emanuele Ponzio, and Finnish designers Maija Liisa Komulainen (best known for her metallic, cylindrical Fuga lamp) and Tapio Wirkkala, creator of the handblown crystal Suomi pendant lamps.

Through the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, RAAK enjoyed enormous success throughout Europe and worldwide for its modern lamps and decorative lighting. In 1974, Lockhorn sold RAAK to the furniture company ITT but remained its director until 1977. In 1980, RAAK merged with BIS Lighting and was renamed BISRAAK. Then, in 1999, the company entered into another merger, this time with Artilite B.V. and Indoor B.V., and became the Center for Light Architecture. It declared bankruptcy in 2011.

RAAK lighting continues to be highly coveted today among interior designers and avid vintage furniture collectors.
