Contemporary Colored Light Sculpture, Baechae Light Series By Atelier Jun

About the Item

Bae-Chae series is a hand-painted light that subtly embrace a traditional painting method. The series draws inspiration from the ancient Korean portrait technique ‘Bae-Chae,' which pigments on the back of a sheet to show through the front, creating depth portrayal and metaphorically revealing essence. Combining the traditional technique with contemporary design, each piece is initiated by documenting daily inspiration through colors. Through a thoughtful exploration and layering of selected hues, the collection slowly achieves the desired tones, creating an atmospheric colored illumination. This intuitive and intimate expression offers an ambient evocation, hoping to illuminate both physical space and inner essence. Every step of the collection's production takes place in our workshop located in Seoul, South Korea. Meticulous attention is given to material preparation and the precise application of pigments, ensuring that every detail is handled with care. A key element of the product is the hand-painted sheets, providing a smooth and translucent surface that later becomes the colored illumination. The frame of the colored illumination is achieved by utilizing Hanji-paper, a traditional Korean paper crafted through domestic techniques. The selection of Hanji reflects its traditional context and biodegradable characteristics. Additional elements include inner light fixture components such as a metal frame, LED strips, and an acrylic sheet, which serve both to diffuse the light and provide protection. This collection was invited to exhibit at Salone Satellite of Milan Design week, 2022-2023.
