About the Item

Sun and moon, an immense relief contrasts a gold bronze cast of lava rock with a silvered bronze cast of gentle slopes and folds of an undisturbed stretch of beach to present a metaphorical “sun” rising over a “moon.” The entire sculpture with its totemic monumentality radiates a warm glow from embedded LEDs, while a curtain of horsehair dramatically descends from the base of the bronze. The work draws inspiration from the ancient Norse mythology of Sol (sun) and Mani (moon) who ride through the sky on horse drawn chariots. Sullivan’s continuing repertoire offers a visual, elegant equilibrium between artifice and nature. New York based contemporary sculptor Erin Sullivan, implements the highest quality casting techniques to create exquisite, realistic bronze interpretations of her organic subject matter. After sculpting models using wax reproductions made from a natural objects, Sullivan creates molds of the final model from which a wax positive is produced. Once this wax is “chased” or reworked with great attention, “gates” or wax rods are attached to create channels through which the molten bronze will travel. The whole structure is then dipped, poured, de-vested, sandblasted, welded, chased, re-detailed, polished and patinated. As Sullivan works on a commission basis, custom dimensionality as well as finishes may be accommodated for a bespoke piece. Bronze, LED, horse hair. Measures: 81” H x 36” W x 3” D.
