Exceptional Pair of 19th Century Gilt Bronze Wall Appliques by Henry Dasson

About the Item

An Important Pair of Louis XIV Style Wall Appliques By Henry Dasson of Paris Of the highest quality and retaining its original fire gilded finish with burnished highlights, each wall applique modelled as a bearded male herm emerging from a scalloped cuirass, surrounded by acanthus, and scrolling foliage, issuing five imbricated arms terminating in scrolls supporting the original drip pans and bobèches. Both signed and dated in the ormolu "Henry Dasson 1885." French, dated 1885 Dimensions: H: 25 in / 64 cm | W: 20 in / 51 cm | D: 11.5 in / 29 cm Henry Dasson (1825-1896) was a celebrated furniture maker of the second half of 19th century who specialised in making ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts. His work was mainly inspired by the art of the period of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI style, adapting them to conform with the needs of the times. In 1871 he bought the company of Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen at 106, rue Vieille-du-Temple, allowing him access to his vast archive and collection of bronzework designs. Dasson exhibited at international exhibitions including Paris in 1878 where he was lauded by Louis Gonse, art critic and Director of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, for the perfection of his work. Dasson won the Grand Prix Artistique and Légion d'honneur for his work.
