Magnificent, rare pair of palace size five light 19th century Louis XVI style Dore bronze figural sconces France, circa 1860 This spectacular pair of sconces is of exceptionally fine quality usually associted with such makers as Henry Dasson, with hand chiselled details and beautiful original gilding. Pure gold was used during this period in the gilding process. Five light sconces are rare and would have been created for a large scale room in a substantial house such as a chateau or palace for dramatic illumination. It was important for the finest sconces to be of high degree of workmanship as they were lit by candle light and later, electricity, which showed the objects prestige and opulence. Each sconce composed of a classical urn finial with attractive laurel leaf garlands held by rams and topped with a flame, five arms each with bell flower reeded decoration and foliate design elements with bobeches decorated with laurel wreath borders, ending in vertical cornucopia with grapes, pears, pomegranates and persimmons symbolizing abundance and prosperity.
