About the Item

Beautiful wall lamps, they belonged to the furnishings of the Hotel Majestic in Naples designed by Arch. Gino Avena in 1958 and the manufacture by Arredoluce. These wall lamps illuminated the hotel lobby and porch. Gino Avena (1898-1979), an architect trained professionally by an eclectic sensibility of his father's mould, a multifaceted and original personality, endowed with a certain irony, a prolific designer sensitive to changing tastes, can be counted among the outstanding figures who contributed to giving the city of Naples a completely new architectural image within its cityscape, not subject to any political formalism and orientation of taste often subject to fickle changes over time. Many of his public works, which have unfortunately been lost, cover time blocks that, although forgotten in the context of historical chronology, are also of fundamental information enrichment for the reconstruction of the city's social and cultural events. The attention of critics has mainly focused on some of his best-known works and has re-evaluated their importance at the end of the 20th century, including them, however, only as partial mentions within a broader and more general architectural discourse and in a limited and sector-specific time context. In 2009, one of his buildings in the Vomero district, designed in Via Morghen in 1935, was declared a particularly important cultural asset to be protected by the Superintendency of Naples.
