Giuseppe Ostuni for O-Luce '181' Multi Applicable Light

About the Item

Giuseppe Ostuni for O-Luce, large set of '181' wall light, Italy, 1950s This stunning design by Giuseppe Ostuni is applicable in many different ways. Attach the lamp to a desk or a table and use it as a desk light, fix it to case piece or secure to the wall. Its dark metal, cylindrical shade is minimalistic and modest. You can place one piece for Directional light, or several to lighten up a complete space. Giuseppe Ostuni (1907-1994) can be considered one of the most influential designers in modern lighting design. Born in Trieste, Italy in 1907, Giuseppe and his older brother Angelo Ostuni (1904-1981) grew up in turbulent times; in 1915 Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire during the First World War. Only a few years later in 1922, Benito Mussolini became head of the Italian government and began to establish his fascist regime that would last till 1943. During the last year of the Second World War, Giuseppe Ostuni and his family lived with his brother Angelo in Milan. There, Giuseppe started to repair lampshades that had been damaged during the war. New lampshades were made with limited resources, all by hand, due to the lack of available materials. As an autodidact, he designed modern and convenient lighting through intense study and ‘learning by doing’. Soon after, Giuseppe set up his own workshop in 1947, and in 1948 he officially registered his company ‘O-LUCE’. Together with his brother Angelo, who made a great part of the lighting drawings, he worked on numerous designs and worked together with leading designers as Franco Buzzi, Tito Angoli, Joe Colombo, Marco Zanuso and more.

    By O-Luce, Tito Agnoli
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Tito Agnoli for O-Luce, wall light, white lacquered metal, teak, cord, brass, plastic, Italy, 1957. Impressive wall mounted light designed by Tito Agnoli, and manufactured by O-Luce. Unique for this item is the combination of elements derived from the 177 A model, designed in 1957, and the 1102 model, designed in 1959. Its arm is an 177 A design and executed in teak, lacquered metal and brass. It features a '1102' pendant hanging on a cord. The cord, directed by a brass tube attached to the wooden arm, leads down where a brass cylinder functions as a counterweight. The brass cylinder keeps the pendant in its position. The design showcases the mechanicals of the lamp, which makes this a very raw yet refined light that would work very well in the living room or as an office light...
