Jean Noverdy French Art Deco Wall Sconce, 1925

About the Item

French Art Deco wall sconce by Jean Noverdy (Dijon), France, circa 1925. Thick salmon/pink molded glass shade. Beautiful wrought iron fixture. Signed "Noverdy France Déposé" on the rim (see photo). A glass thread inherent to the technique of this period (see photo when lit) and some small surfacing chips on the edges hidden by the metal fixture. Delivered wired for your country (EU, US, Australia, China, etc). LED can be used. About Jean Noverdy: In the 1920s, Jean Noverdy, a student of Mr. Dubret, creates art glass in his own glassworks located in Dijon, 17, Place Bossuet. To make the best use of electrical lighting, he creates lamps with shades the most often made of glass with two layers between which he pulverizes colored enamels to give a marmoreal look. Molded glass vases and shades are also a part of his production. The same techniques used by Daum Frères, André Delatte and Muller Freres in this period. He also created acid-etched vases and shades in the style of the school of Nancy. Between 1926 and 1928, he is present at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in Paris. Less known than the famous Nancean glassworks, his production can be compared with them. Maybe a biography would have to be published to honour his work and give him the reputation that he deserves.

Max le Verrier was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1891. From an early age, he showed great promise as an artist and sculptor; and after serving in the French army during World War I, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. During his studies in Switzerland, he met the sculptors Pierre le Faguays and Marcel Bouraine, who became close friends and with whom he collaborated for a large part of his life. After completing his studies, the Verrier returned to France in 1919 and founded his own workshop in Paris. It was during this time that he created his first popular sculpture - the famous "Pelican" - which was the first in a long line of animal figures that bore his name. Le Verrier received a gold medal for his sculptures at the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925 (the famous exhibition from which the term "Art Deco" was derived). In 1926, Le Verrier opened his own foundry, casting pieces for a wide range of French sculptors of the time, including Pierre Le Faguays, Marcel Bouraine, Janle, Denis and Charles...
