Klaus Michalik "Bau" Wall Lamps for Stockmann Orno, Sweden 1960s

About the Item

In the design annals of 1960s Sweden, Klaus Michalik's "Bau" wall lamps stand as iconic embodiments of mid-century modern creativity and innovation. Crafted in collaboration with the renowned Finnish producer, Stockmann Orno, these lamps seamlessly meld form and function. Michalik's ingenuity is evident in the use of brass and white glass, a classic Scandinavian pairing that not only exudes timeless elegance, but also captures the essence of the era's design ethos. These "Bau" lamps boast a distinctive dual structure with two separate half-sphere shaped glass shades, casting a warm, ambient glow. The choice of materials reflects Michalik's commitment to quality, with brass backplates and shade holders contributing to the lamps' sleek and minimalist dualist aesthetic. However, the allure of these "Bau" lamps lies not only in their material and aesthetic appeal, but also in the pragmatic design that allows for versatile illumination. The play of brass and glass not only adds a touch of opulence but also ensures durability and longevity. The clever design makes it look like each lamp was halved and is now connected by the brass rod in the middle. This makes for a neat optical effect, creating a sense of magnetism that draws each half towards the other. Klaus Michalik's legacy endures through these masterpieces, showcasing the enduring charm of 1960s Swedish design. The craftsmanship complements Stockmann Orno A.B., a major lighting factory, founded in 1921 in Helsinki, Finland. In 1936, Stockmann became the owner of Orno and the company moved to Kerava in 1937. As a stalwart in the Scandinavian design scene, the company played a pivotal role in bringing Michalik's vision to life. The collaboration between Michalik and Stockmann Orno underscores the synergy between visionary designers and skilled manufacturers during the golden mid-century era of design in Sweden. This pair has a true design edge that is timeless and is compatible with any style and space. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Rauni Peippo "Apila" Stool for Stockmann Orno, Finland 1960s
By Orno Stockmann
Located in Utrecht, NL
This famous pine stool by Finnish interior designer Rauni Peippo is the most famous model from the ‘Apila’ set, that contains a table and bar stools as well. It is one of those models that is immediately recognizable thanks to its shape. Finnish design is appreciated around the world for its minimalistic appearance, playful forms and strict functionalism. After Finland became independent, a dialogue with nature was to become the prime force in the ongoing evolution of Finnish design. This relationship with nature was much in evidence in 20th century Finnish design, which actively expanded on the metaphors and motifs therein. This progression is evident in this iconic stool. “Apila” means “clover” in Finnish, which comes as no surprise; the four leaf clover-shaped seat is carved from pine wood, enhancing the already organic impression of this model. It is infinitely stylish, with sleek tapered legs that counterbalance the round, soft edges of the body. The design dates to the mid-century and the first manufacturer was Stockmann Orno, a manufacturer with a history that dates back to 1862. (It is still the largest department store in the Nordic countries.) This stool was previously misattributed to fellow Finnish designer, Lisa Johansson-Pape, but is now well-documented. Thanks to its sturdy construction and undeniable style, this ‘Apila’ stool...
