About the Item

Pair (2) of iconic original Ingo Maurer wall sconces, model Uchiwa, a design classic German lighting designer Ingo Maurer first discovered some uchiwa, traditional Japanese fans made of bamboo and lacquered rice paper, in a Parisian shop in 1972. He was looking for something that would create a soft light." Uchiwa proved to be the solution. So he traveled to Japan and met Tetsuo Shigeki, a fisherman in Kagawa Prefecture and a member of a family that had been making uchiwa for generations, some even for the local samurai. Most artisans had already abandoned bamboo in favor of plastic, but Shigeki was a master of the old methods. Maurer sent some samples to Munich, where he attached the beauties to wire frames and transformed the fans into lamps that emitted "a warmer, more pleasant light." Bloomingdale's began selling them in 1977—and hundreds of stores followed. Shigeki's team could barely keep up with demand. In 1974, a massive oil slick polluted the Seto Inland Sea, including a stretch off Marugame, not far from Shigeki's studio, and many people who had been growing nori lost their jobs. Some offered to Maurer offered to make uchiwa if he promised a year's employment. Since the designer had more uchiwa than he could use, he arranged the compartments into increasingly elaborate devices, some containing up to 70 pieces. Some wear and tear. Please refer to the detailed photos for the condition.
