About the Item

Pair of English WWI Brass Bulkhead Ship/Trench Lanterns/Sconces by Bulpitt & Sons, stamped 'BULPITT 1914' This rare pair of WWI-period lanterns, now electrified, captures a significant piece of history. Originally designed as ship or officer oil lamps or sconces, these brass lanterns were crafted by Bulpitt & Sons in 1914. Established as a 19th-century brass foundry, Bulpitt & Sons gained renown for their manufacturing excellence, producing domestic and industrial lamps, including those for lighthouses, ships, and railways. Each lantern stands 21 inches high to the top of the handle and 16 inches to the top of the lamp, with dimensions of 8 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The lanterns are constructed of solid, heavy-gauge brass and feature a swing wood handle and a hinged cover with three angled glass panels enclosing the original oil burner. A substantial bulkhead mounting bracket is attached to the back for secure placement. These lanterns retain all original oil lamp components, including the oil burner and an external flame-adjusting key. They feature ventilation on all sides above the windows and a hinged vent on top of the chimney. The three-sided glass face includes a right-side access door with a slide latch for easy removal of the burner. Electrified through the top, these lanterns offer a blend of historical authenticity and modern functionality, making them a unique and functional addition to any collection or interior.
