Pair of Aluminum Wall Sconces by Daughter Mfg

About the Item

These aluminum Teardrop Sconces have an outer shell that is made from two halves made from 6101 aluminum that have been joined together using a pin and groove joinery. The material is 1/4" thick x 3" deep and was annealed and formed into shape, then polished to a mirror finish. The front interior is an 1/8" aluminum plate in a teardrop profile that has been fitted into the two aluminum halves and held in position by an 1/8" groove that runs the entire profile of the piece. It has then had a tinted baby blue epoxy (closest color is Pantone 2985) poured on top to create the glossy color element. The shade is a spun piece made from 6101 aluminum and held in place with a light press fit. It is easily removable. The ball-head toggle switch is a vintage AH & H product secured in place by a machined solid aluminum surround. The back has a floating 1/8" brass sheet to enclose the wiring with a logo stamped on it. It is mounted on standoffs and has a slight reveal around the edges that allow light to escape that will reflect off the wall it is mounted on. The sconce includes an aluminum "cleat" that mounts to the wall with either two flathead wood screws (#10) or two 6-32 machine screws that are spaced to mount on standard electrical box spacings (3 13/16" or 3 9/32" center-to-center). There is a 3/4" access hole through the aluminum cleat so that the boxes can be mounted and hard wired, but you would need to inform us this is the intended use so that we modify the back plate for you. The pieces are finished with a braided vintage cloth cord and two-prong bakelite style plug. All the sections of exposed internal wiring has been carefully sealed with shrink wrap for safety. These are one-of-a-kind prototypes that show some small imperfections, like fixture markings, from the manufacturing process. We have no present plans to produce more of these.

  • Polished Aluminum Pagoda Lamp - Model 1 by Daughter Mfg
    Located in Camden, ME
Pagoda Lamp Model 1 is one half of a pair of lamps designed and fabricated during 2021. The inspiration is the Peace Pagoda in San Francisco's Japantown neighborhood designed by Yoshiro Taniguchi, constructed in the 1960s. The center column of the lamp is constructed from pieces of 1/8" aluminum sheet that have been polished on all sides and assembled into a circular lattice structure. Each opening in the lattice has individually poured "windows" made from a clear epoxy that have some small bubbles and irregularities that mimic a hand-made glass. The windows are pierced by 1/16" diameter brass rods that run the length of the circular lattice and help to hold the windows in place. The interior is lit by a T-10 elongated bulb, which sits slightly proud of the top surface of the lamp. There are a total of four spun pieces of 1100-series aluminum that adorn the circular lattice, comprised of the top cap (1) and mini-shades (3), which are equally spaced along the length of the circular lattice structure. These have all been hand-polished. The top cap is held in place with a snug slip fit (which can be easily taken on and off), while the mini-shades are held in place with small machined brass connectors and 4-40 brass slotted roundhead screws. The base is constructed from two 1100-series aluminum shells that have been spun and hand-polished. Circular tool marks left by the spinning process have been left behind to add visual interest. The interior of the base houses a large black-anodized aluminum ring, roughly 7/8" thick, that is used to join the halves together and houses the vintage AH & H ball...
