About the Item

A significant pair of American Louis XVI style gilt bronze wall sconces by E. F. Caldwell. The sconces are designed in a neoclassical form with a rectangular backplate terminating in a foliate finial. Each features two outward curving arms that support circular drip pans with gadrooned edges and candle-form sockets, now electrified. The arms extend from a central mount decorated with a ram’s head mask, flanked by applied festoon garlands suspended across the backplate. Above, the backplate rises into an oval medallion framed by a laurel wreath and surmounted by a ribbon-tied bow, a motif characteristic of Louis XVI ornament. The structure is gilt throughout, with chased details emphasizing the foliate patterns and classical elements. These sconces are by E. F. Caldwell & Co., one of the leading American lighting manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Caldwell’s workshop was known for its use of French neoclassical designs, often drawing from Louis XVI models and collaborating with architects and decorators for both private and institutional commissions. The present sconces exhibit Caldwell’s typical precision in chasing and gilding, as well as the use of classical motifs including rams’ heads, laurel wreaths, and ribbon-tied crests, all rendered in gilt bronze. The firm employed master chasers and gilders, producing designs directly inspired by French models from the 18th century. These sconces reflect the company’s fidelity to Louis XVI's decorative vocabulary and its high technical standards. Caldwell’s work was widely commissioned for prominent American residences, including those designed by leading architects such as McKim, Mead & White, and continues to represent the pinnacle of American neoclassical decorative lighting.
