A pair of French Bagues style sconces of carved and gilded wood each featuring a parrot flanked by two scrolled arms adorned with leaves supporting a candle cup circa 1920. The firm of Maison Bagues is famous the world over for the sheer luxury and inventiveness of its products. Beginning in the nineteenth century they specialized in creating the highest quality bronze lighting fixtures as the spread of electricity became widespread both commercially and privately. The firm continues to offer an exceptional range of traditional lighting pieces today from their headquarters in Paris. This particular pair of sconces is the notable "Perroquets" or parrots example of the Maison Bagues created during the 1920's by the brothers Victor and Robert. The best known examples were made of gilded bronze with crystal overlay (still available new). The desirability of the pictured pair results from their rare appearance in carved and gilded wood that possess the same combination of facing parrots perched atop a slender column with a pair of naturalistic branches adorned with leaves supporting a pair of candle arms. The entire finish on each of the sconces is the original paint and gilding that gives them a subtle sparkle. The old wiring is still visible on the reverse side of the sconces and they may easily be wired for installation in a new home or left as is to use with real candles. The whimsy and rigour of the design is as potent today as when they were first offered and continue to be a special focal point wherever they are placed.
