About the Item

Pair of French modernist wall sconces in brushed nickel plating with a faux eglomise beveled acrylic panel on the face of the backplate, attributed to Genet et Michon. Dimensions shown are for sconce without shades. Shades shown for display purposes only. Rewired for USA. Each sconce takes two E12 candelabra screw cap lightbulbs up to 60 watts each; these are fitted inside the B22 bayonet socket to preserve the original uno ring structure. Philippe Genet was born in Paris on May 25, 1882; a former student of the Ecole Boulle, he founded in 1911, with Lucien Michon, "A drawing cabinet for the study of furniture, seats, lighting". Philippe Genet is a member of the Development Council of the Boulle Technical College, the Departmental Committee of Technical Education and a full member of the French Exhibitions Committee. Lucien Michon was born in Paris on April 8, 1887; a former student of Debrie (anatomy) and Valton (scupture) in an academy in Montparnasse, he studied the technique of bronze and wood in various specialized workshops. He exhibited in 1907 at the Salon des Artistes français (Decorative Art section); then joined forces with Philippe Genet and their artistic activities were confused by Vice-President of the Lighting section and member of the Jury at the 1937 Exhibition, a full member of the French Exhibition Committee, Lucien Michon has been a Knight of the Legion of Honor since 1937. In 1919, Genet and Michon transformed the Drawing Cabinet they had founded in 1911 into an Art Lighting Workshop. Since 1920 they have exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Décorateurs and d'Automne and have won first prizes in the competition organized at the 1925 Exhibition by the Chambre syndicale du bronze. Holder of the highest awards awarded by the Société d'Encouragement à l'Art et à l'Industrie, they participate in all major exhibitions in France and abroad and win diplomas and grand prizes. The State entrusted them with the organization of the Luminaire for the Embassies of France in Belgrade, Warsaw, Cairo, Ottawa and London; in Paris for the Elysée, National Palaces and various ministries. They have also designed and realized the lighting of many liners.. Genet and Michon are decorators, creators of models that have become specialists in lighting. Decorators they both acquired an in-depth knowledge of old furniture and objects, undoubtedly deprive their taste for beautiful materials and perfect execution. Before this specialization, they had, among other things, made the interior decoration of the first "Beef on the roof". Genet and Michon collaborated with the masters of contemporary decorative art: Dufrène, Follot, Ruhlmann. They strive to invent models - chandeliers, ceiling lights, torches, sconces and lamps corresponding to architectural needs of both great luxury and functional. In any case, they strive to remain faithful to this tradition of a beautiful profession that tends to get lost and fight against technical poverty or even slug. They mainly use golden bronze or simply poh, fire oxide bronze with beautiful and sensitive patinas, or incise the metal with a fine work of hand chiseling then gilded with mercury. They were the promoters of the pressed glass adapted to the luminaire and now use plexiglass, a precious, transparent material of an opaline gray that lends itself to all kinds of treatments: cut into balls, rods, leaves, worked like crystal. For some flarks, they combine lacquer with coatings of oxidized ice strips on a gold background. In a word, they know how to maintain, when there is a tradition of somptuosite and technical vanements and give to vational devices by the use of beautiful materials, by the care of the execution and by the purity of the forms, a quality of good life protected from the fluctuations of fashions.
