About the Item

Finnish designer, Carin Lisa Johansson-Pape, was among the most significant Finnish lighting designers in the second half of the 20th century. She created furniture for Stockmann from 1937, and from 1942 she worked for the Stockmann owned lighting factory, Orno, being their main lighting designer from the late 40s into the 60s, along with Yki Nummy. Johansson-Pape’s designs were always minimal, concise, and highly functional. While in terms of shapes and forms, her designs are outstandingly versatile, though the Finnish designer had a clear preference of materials, often using enamelled metal, acrylic, and glass. This pair of “1017” ceiling lamps showcases her use of opal glass, also known as milk glass - it is made by adding opacifiers to the glass melt - which results in a cosy effect as the lamps provide great ambient lighting. Opal glass is prized for its smooth, opaque finish, giving these lamps an overall sophisticated and refined look. The combination of the interesting material and simple design is effective in creating an understated look. The lamps are flush mounted, leaving only the bodies on top of the surface. This allows all the attention fall on the rounded shape and the opal glass. With this pair of ceiling lights lies a focus on both simplicity and functionality; the rounded shades are a subtle addition to a space that glows with a warm gentle light, adding to the overall cozy atmosphere of any interior. These “1017” ceiling lamps embody the sleek and simple aesthetic that characterised Finnish design in the 1950s. The Finnish design blueprint that was set during the first few decades of the 1900s is based on characteristics that can be traced in this lamp model: functionality, an honest, unornamented design created from high quality materials - and most importantly, by a skilled craftsperson. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamps have recently been rewired. Dimensions: 15.74 in ø x 6.29 in H 40 cm ø x 16 cm H
