About the Item

Pair of patinated bronze bat-shaped wall sconces after William Tonks & Sons Continental Patinated bronze 20th Century Height 34.5cm, width 24cm, depth 10.5cm This intriguing pair of wall sconces, crafted from patinated bronze, is modelled after a design by William Tonks & Sons for Liberty & Co., designed at the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. Founded in 1794, the English firm, renowned for its brassfounding and metalwork, specialised in architectural hardware, ecclesiastical and artistic metalware, as well as decorative objects. Cast in the form of hanging bats, the wall lights pay homage to the Gothic Revival style, which enjoyed popularity in the late 19th century. The bats hang upside down from stylised branches, their wings slightly extended to create visual balance. Twin drip trays emerge from the bats’ mouths. The bronze is exquisitely cast, capturing delicate anatomical details such as the skeletal structure and fur texture. The bats’ faces project forward, adding dimensionality while also serving as support for the shaped drip trays. When lit by candlelight, the pieces come alive, casting dramatic shadows that enhance their sculptural presence. This fine pair is a celebration of Victorian design, reflecting both the era’s fascination with the natural world and its love of craftsmanship and ornamentation.
