Pair of Rope Wall Sconces by Adrien Audoux & Frida Minet, France, 1950s

About the Item

Elevate your space with this rare and striking pair of wall sconces by French design duo Audoux & Minet, celebrated for their unique use of natural materials and organic forms during the 1950s. These handcrafted pieces exemplify the designers' rustic-modern aesthetic, merging refined craftsmanship with a strong maritime influence. Each sconce is made from thick, twisted hemp rope intricately knotted into a sculptural loop, characteristic of Audoux & Minet’s signature style. The natural fiber provides a warm, tactile presence, while the raw yet elegant form brings both artistry and function to the wall. The patinated brass bulb holders add an industrial touch and provide a beautiful contrast to the earthy rope texture. Ideal for use with Edison-style or LED bulbs, these sconces cast a cozy, ambient glow when lit. Origin: France Period: 1950s Materials: Hemp rope, brass Dimensions: Height: 28 cm (11 in) Width (top loop): 13 cm (5.1 in) Depth: 17 cm (6.7 in) Condition: Excellent vintage condition with light patina to the brass, consistent with age and use. E14 socket adapters will be provided. Shades are not included. These iconic postwar French designs fit beautifully into coastal, wabi-sabi, or mid-century interiors. A statement addition for collectors and design lovers who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and natural materials. Adrien Audoux & Frida Minet. French-Swiss modernist design duo (active mainly in the 1940s–1950s). Adrien Audoux, originally from Franche-Comté, and Frida Minet, who was Swiss-born, were a married couple and design partners. They founded their design studio in Cannes in 1929, likely during their honeymoon. In 1942, they relocated to Golfe-Juan (French Riviera), where they developed their distinctive style. Their work was grounded in the use of natural and accessible materials like: Hemp rope Rattan Bamboo Wood They embraced a rustic modernism, creating pieces that were both functional and warm, blending modern design principles with handcrafted aesthetics. Their approach was informed by a post-war context, emphasizing simplicity, honesty in materials, and affordability. Chairs, armchairs, tables, and light fixtures made with rope and wood. Organic lines and raw, tactile textures. A cozy, artisanal look that contrasts with the more industrial modernist trends of the time. They became especially known for their rope furniture, which gained popularity in the 1950s and is now emblematic of their style. Their pieces were often commissioned by or sold to the affluent clientele of the French Riviera.
