About the Item
Rare XL Holophane Reflector-Refractor Wall Light with Original Cast Brass Scroll Bracket – Circa 1930
A rare and architecturally impressive wall-mounted Holophane fitting featuring an enormous 14-inch three-part reflector–refractor glass shade and its original cast brass scrolled wall bracket.
This early 20th-century piece delivers both technical brilliance and decorative impact, making it one of the more substantial Holophane wall sconces we’ve handled.
The Holophane “Reflector-Refractor” series was developed following the company’s commission to illuminate St Paul’s Cathedral in 1923. These innovations allowed greater light output and control—balancing brightness with reduced glare through multi-layered prismatic glass engineering.
This example, stamped with model numbers 2140-6 and U.S.A, speaks to the international prestige of Holophane at the time.
The cast brass bracket is an exceptional survivor—deeply aged, richly patinated, and rarely found in this scale. Ideal for large hallways, stairwells, or statement commercial interiors looking to harness period character with technical authenticity.
The artist’s figure in the images is 6ft 1" to give a true representation of scale.

In addition to its practical qualities, vintage Holophane glass is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of vintage and industrial design. The prismatic texture of the glass creates a unique visual effect that is both beautiful and functional, making it a popular choice for use in home decor and lighting fixtures. The vintage Holophane glass is often paired with high-quality metal fixtures, such as brass or cast iron, to create a look that is both elegant and industrial in style.
