About the Item

Sciolari brass wall lights, a pair, circa 1970s, Italian. These vintage wall lights have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are rewired, earthed and ready to install. Light bulbs included. It is possible to install these lights in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity. These modernist wall lights attributed to Italian designer Gaetano Sciolari, have a pared down design based on the traditional wall sconce. There are several simple but effective design details such as the tubular shape with exaggerated width, continuous curving flow into what might be a bobeche, and highly polished finish. These wall lights would suit a range of interiors such as Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, 1970s glamour, postmodern, industrial and contemporary. Both lights are of great quality and weight. Structurally each frame in solid polished brass has three tubular columns, two short either side of the longer. The width of each column is slightly exaggerated. Towards the bottom each curves out to suggest a bobeche. The centre tube is longer extending at both the top & bottom. The centre tube is attached to the circular brass base, which sits on a circular white lacquered portion that is raised from the wall creating depth. On the reverse side of the brass base there is the white lacquered cup containing inside the electrical connector. There is also the metal wall bracket with two holes to fit each light to the wall. The lacquered cup attaches at each side with a screw to the bracket. Fitted to the bracket there is also a switch to control each light individually from the frame if needed. So these lights can be connected to the electrical main switch and also be operated individually from each frame. They are also suitable for a dimmer switch. Each wall light takes three standard E14 small screw light bulbs up to 40 Watts each. Fitted at present and photographed with clear Candle shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts which are included in this price. Finished with Candle shaped light bulbs these wall lights can have a traditional Gothic effect. Alternatively any other E14 light bulb shapes could be used such as Pygmy or Golf for a Modernist look. These vintage wall lights are in very good condition. The original lacquer is present on the solid brass with only minor rubbing and a few tiny marks on the brass surface in line with age. The price is for the pair. Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. The frame would be wrapped in bubble wrap and could be securely boxed ideal for posting. Additional dimensions: The white lacquer base that sits on the wall has a diameter of 6.5 cm. Gaetano Sciolari biography: While Sciolari Lighting has been around since 1892, it was their most famous offspring Gaetano Sciolari who went on to design for Italian manufacturer Stilnovo in the 1950s.

The work of celebrated mid-century Italian lighting designer and entrepreneur Angelo Gaetano Sciolari became widely popular in the United States during the postwar years and strongly influenced lighting makers around the world. The sculptural forms and striking geometric details of his vintage floor lamps, chandeliers and other fixtures fit seamlessly into the mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency interiors of the day.

Sciolari formally studied architecture but also pursued filmmaking for a short period. When his father passed away in 1949, Sciolari took the reins at his family's company, Sciolari Lighting, which had been in business in Rome since 1892. The manufacturer expanded considerably under Gaetano’s leadership. For one, pioneering American lighting company Lightolier, in New York City, began to import the Italian brand’s lighting for the U.S. market, and Lightolier’s star designer, Gerald Thurston, was significantly influenced by Gaetano’s work. In the 1970s, Americans looking to add provocative fixtures created by Gaetano Sciolari to their living rooms could find them in Lightolier catalogs.

Sciolari initially crafted lamps and sconces that bore the hallmarks of traditional Italian design. But during the 1950s, when he would become the in-house designer for legendary Milan lighting manufacturer Stilnovo — one of the leaders of Italian postwar design — he created revolutionary fixtures that endured as his best-known work.

Sciolari drew on a range of influences — enthusiasts see the imprint of Art Deco, brutalism and more in his lighting — and designed futuristic Space Age chandeliers, ceiling lamps and pendants for Stilnovo as well as Stilkronen and S.A. Boulanger that defied the conventions of the time. A dizzying array of materials and finishes characterizes the designer’s work, while geometry is pronounced in each sculptural fixture — there are blown opal glass spheres, polished chrome tubes and brass square bulb holders. These combinations were critical to the development of dazzling lighting that proves eye-catching in any space decades later.
