This is an original and distinctive pair of wall sconces. Each sconce features a chrome-plated brass box as its base, with a central support for two opposing light sources, positioned to distribute light effectively. On each side of the support, two tubular elements are expertly placed, capped with bright crystal spheres. A wall attachment plate is installed on the back of each box for secure mounting. The robust chrome plating was achieved through a galvanic process, creating a pure and precise geometric and aesthetic contrast. Together, these sconces showcase the sleek, refined aesthetic of polished chrome-plated brass in a modern yet minimalist design. Elegant and sophisticated, they are unique decorative pieces that effortlessly suit both contemporary and classic settings. These sconces were crafted between 1964 and 1968 in a Milanese workshop, inspired by a design by Gaetano Sciolari—a renowned Italian designer and entrepreneur celebrated for his contributions to the Space Age style. Gaetano Sciolari played a key role in establishing Italian design internationally, particularly in the United States. Sciolari was not only a visionary businessman but also a creative designer who produced remarkable and innovative lighting. After his father's death in 1949, Sciolari took over the family business and rapidly transformed it into a global enterprise. Sciolari’s company became the first Italian lighting manufacturer to successfully enter the U.S. market. His designs have since inspired countless Italian artisans and major lighting companies. The style of these sconces embodies the "Space Age" aesthetic, which emerged at the dawn of the space era, commonly associated with the launch of Sputnik in October 1957 and lasting through the 1970s. Objects from this period are distinguished by essential, geometric forms, which marked a clear departure from the rationalist tradition. Our sconces, as noted, feature a "space-like" design typical of that captivating era. With their fundamental geometric style, they serve as true statement pieces, creating a unique atmosphere in any home. The sconces are in good condition. The chrome-plated parts display minimal, negligible signs of age, which attests to their authenticity. Dimensions: width 15 cm, depth 11 cm, height 32 cm. The electrical system is functional, though the wiring is European; an electrician should verify voltage compatibility for use in other countries.
