Wall Lamp "Bo" by Jørgen Bo for Fog og Mørup, Denmark 1960s

About the Item

This wall lamp of Fog & Mørup production was designed by architect and designer Professor Jørgen Bo. Like the architect/designer’s other creations, the wall sconce is brilliant in its simplicity. A truely timeless piece. Dating from the late 1960s, this “Bo” lamp has had a matte brass base and opal glass shade. It was also in the 1960s that Fog & Mørup really emerged as a significant force in lighting design, a period that initiated the most creatively and commercially successful period in the company’s history. The 1960s were defined by leading Danish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist designs that became the trademark style of Fog & Mørup and propelled the company into the forefront of Danish modern lighting. Among them was Jørgen Bo, and his simple, iconic design, the present “Bo” (sometimes referred to as “Sonet”) wall light. This brass and opal glass model is coveted for its clean and straightforwardly modern look. The sleek design combines a matte brass base with a cylindrical glass shade. Beside the atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design, the wall lamp is a statement piece that draws the eye despite its simplicity. Since the two materials dictate the look, much attention was paid to quality and to the craftsmanship that united it into the cylindrical shape. While opal glass has been around since the 16th century, mid-century designers, such as Jørgen Bo often used the material in combination with brass to create a timelessly modern look. The design has great proportions, the large shades are balanced by the back plate to create an attention-grabbing look. When lit, the lamp creates an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the matte brass a vivid colour as well. Model “Bo” is a modernist design to its core with a look that is ageless and can stand out but also complement any space. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some small marks on the base. Dimensions: 3.14 in ø x 11.22 in H 8 cm ø x 28.5 cm H

"Saga" Wall Sconces by Kay Kørbing for Lyfa, Denmark 1960s
By Kay Korbing, Lyfa
Located in Utrecht, NL
These Lyfa-edition “Saga” wall sconces by Danish architect and designer, Kay Kørbing are true collectors’ pieces. By the 1950s, Lyfa had built an international reputation for original, high-quality, modernist lamps. In the postwar era, the company collaborated with esteemed architects and designers to produce minimalist, sculptural pieces including these lamps. Made of brass, metal, and crystal, the design of this model is entirely in the vein of modernism, while also sticking to the main ideals of Danish design, such as functionality. This can be observed in the lamps’ build that allows them to be faced either up- or downwards. The proportions are carefully thought out, with three main sections comprising the design. The three elements - the brass base, black metal shade holder, and the crystal glass shade - are clearly separated both by their shape, material, and colour. Most eye-catching are the Orrefors crystal glass shades in a peculiar shape that appear to be roll cut. Orrefors has been established in Swedish design tradition since 1898. Glass from the forests of Småland was incomparable: “Il n’y as que ça!” (There is nothing like it!) exclaimed the 1925 Paris World Fair. As these sconces showcase, the glass and shape are always in focus, combined with elegance, simplicity, and confidence. The predominantly round shapes are balanced by the square backplate. The artistic design is very honest in a purely Scandinavian manner, exposing the joinery and the materials’ natural qualities as well. This pair of “Saga” wall sconces is a stunning example of how the 1960s are still able to deliver modern "art" to any interior. The producer, Lyfa, produced some cabin lamps...
