An 18th-Century Pair of Baroque Giltwood Candlestick Lamps A magnificent pair of 18th-century Baroque giltwood candlesticks, now sensitively converted to table lamps, radiating the grandeur and theatricality of the period. Once guardians of candlelight in a sacred or aristocratic setting, they now cast their glow through the gentle hum of electricity, retaining every ounce of their historical dignity. The boldly turned baluster columns rise from voluminous bases upon small bun feet, each surface richly carved with scrolling ornament in the exuberant manner of the Baroque. Layers of gold leaf, mellowed by centuries into a deep, honeyed patina, catch the light with a living warmth, revealing the hand of the carver and the luxury of their original commission. Baroque design, born in Italy and embraced across Europe from the early 17th to mid-18th centuries, was a language of power and devotion — opulent, dynamic, and charged with movement.
