1960s Brutalist Pottery Lamp by Bernard Rooke, England

About the Item

A sculptural Brutalist style studio pottery table lamp by Bernard Rooke, handcrafted in England during the 1960s. This taller, oval-bodied form showcases Rooke’s instinct for organic abstraction — a refined departure from the heavier brutalist language that defined much of his work in this period. The central motif is a deeply modelled red leaf, applied front and back, flanked by vertical, ribbon-like elements suggestive of grasses or flames. The composition is rich in texture and dimensionality, with glazes shifting between earthy ochre, iron red, and a soft wash of lavender-grey across the shoulders. There is a small flaw — likely a firing chip — at the centre of the front leaf, stable and modest but noted for accuracy. Otherwise, the piece remains in very good condition with the original form and finish well preserved. The lamp bears Rooke’s impressed ‘BR’ mark to the base. Measurements: Height 41.5 cm × Width 17 cm × Depth 13 cm. A quietly expressive piece from Rooke’s studio practice, marked by naturalistic forms and a grounded, elemental palette — a considered choice for collectors of post-war British ceramics and mid-century design.
