1960s F.A.I.P. Chinoiserie Table Lamp With New Shade
About the Item
Large statement table lamp chalk ware on a walnut base. Beautiful birds and flowers adorn this gorgeous lamp. We have paired this lamp with a bold Merlot velveteen shade that has silver faux leather accents. A savory patina enriches the bone colored vintage carved Asian chalkware lamps. Each bit of these lamps were ornately decorated with carved Oriental botanical and figural elements. A series of medallions decorate the mid-section, depicting scenes from traditional Chinese life and natural landscapes. At the base, a single band of metallic gold shimmers to accentuate the curved silhouette.
Chalkware soared in popularity during the mid-century period (1945-1965). The expressive medium was perfect for home decor such as lamps, figurines, wall decor and memorabilia. Commercial artists and fine artists alike began to create in this ever popular medium. Artists created commercially reproduced replicas of European sculpture, to kitsch images of exotic travel, cartoonish characters and humor.
Chalkware lamps have become a sought after collector’s item for mid-century modern fans. These lamps were products of the jet-set age’s fascination with exotic cultures of Europe, Polynesian, Asian and the Middle East. Common motifs were dancers (often sold as a male and female pair), innocent or sensual figures, trees, flowers, animals, zig-zags, waves and modern abstract sculpture typical of the period.
