19th C. E.F. Caldwell (attrib) Pair of Gilt Bronze and Rouge Royale Marble Lamps

About the Item

Attributed to E.F. Caldwell, Monumental Pair of Gilt Bronze and Rouge Royale Marble Lamps with Custom Shades, Late 19th Century An extraordinary pair of monumental table lamps in the Louis XVI taste, attributed to the prestigious New York firm Edward F. Caldwell & Co., circa 1890s. Each lamp features an urn-form stem cast in finely chiseled gilt bronze, richly ornamented with neoclassical motifs including draped garlands, beadwork, fluting, and acanthus leaves. The bodies are set on substantial stepped plinths of Rouge Royale marble with recessed paneling and scrolled corner elements, a format consistent with Caldwell's Gilded Age commissions. Topped with pleated silk shades trimmed in green fringe and rosettes, the lamps are crowned with gilt-bronze flame finials—another hallmark often found in Caldwell’s architectural lighting. The dual-socket arrangement and flame-motif shaft finial further reflect the firm’s custom electrification details for high-society clients and landmark residences. Though unmarked, these lamps exhibit several characteristics typical of Caldwell’s production: Exceptional casting and hand-chased finishing Use of Rouge Royale marble in architectonic plinths Classical Louis XVI design vocabulary High-quality electrification hardware including arrow-form keys and dual sockets Scale and execution consistent with known Caldwell table and architectural lamps commissioned for grand New York interiors Dimensions Overall: 50 in. high x 31 in. diameter Shade: 15 in. high x 31 in. diameter Base: Approx. 11 in. square Condition Good overall condition. Tarnishing and light discoloration to bronze surfaces. Cracking and visible old repairs to one marble base. Electrified; fixed-height and structurally sound. Provenance A Private Collection Attribution Attributed to Edward F. Caldwell & Co., New York Circa 1890–1900 Craftsmanship & Method: These lamps reflect the exceptional materials and workmanship associated with Edward F. Caldwell & Co., one of the most prominent decorative lighting firms in Gilded Age America. The urn-form stems were likely cast using the lost-wax or fine sand-casting method, then meticulously hand-chased to articulate classical garlands, fluting, and acanthus details. The richly patinated gilt bronze would have been fire-gilded or chemically treated for its warm finish. Each lamp rests on a precisely cut Rouge Royale marble plinth, assembled with internal pinning and channels for early electrification. The dual-socket fittings and flame finials are typical of Caldwell’s transitional gas-to-electric lighting designs. Though the pleated silk shades are later additions, they echo the formality and scale of custom salon lighting favored by Caldwell’s elite clientele.
