About the Item

Standing on a painted wooden base, this distinctive lamp is hard-wired and dressed with a custom shade and decorative finial. The base is crafted from an authentic 19th century Provençal confit pot, a traditional earthenware vessel once used daily in the French country home for cooking and preserving meats. These pots display beautiful rustic glazes in green or yellow over a terracotta finish, with the bottom half left unglazed so they could be buried in the ground without damage to the surface. The word confit means “to preserve,” and these vessels were essential for storing cooked meats—most often duck (confit de canard) or goose (confit d’oie). Buried in earth or kept in cool, stone-lined larders, the preserved meat could be enjoyed throughout the winter months before refrigeration. This example retains its rich green glaze with natural drips, timeworn patina, and twin handles, now repurposed into a functional and historically significant lighting piece. Measures 31" high by 16" in diameter including shade and finial. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and a striking blend of French farmhouse heritage with timeless lighting design.
