About the Item

In the late 1970s, Nelson Rockefeller decided to create a line of reproductions that were marketed through catalogs in Neiman Marcus and Art Galleries. "The Nelson Rockefeller Collection" was a collection of important high quality furniture, art and objects created from the originals Rockefeller himself owned. Rockefeller's purpose for creating these reproductions "was for others to share the enjoyment of living with beautiful things." Information from The Nelson Rockefeller Collection Catalog: Loïe Fuller lamp The first dancer to make artistic use of the incandescent filament in her performances at the Folies-Bergere, Loie Fuller (1862-1928) was inspiration for this Raul Larche Art Nouveau lamp. Reproduced in bronze. Limited Edition of 100. 17 3/4" hight (wt. 21 lbs.) Original price in 1979 was $1,700. This piece is signed Raoul Larche as well as the Nelson Rockefeller Mark 1979 #31. Additional information about the artist and the piece from MOMA: Loïe Fuller, The Dancer Raoul François Larche (French, 1860–1912) Raoul François Larche was one of a number of artists inspired by the American dancer and choreographer Loïe Fuller. In his sinuous Art Nouveau sculpture, Loïe Fuller, The Dancer, he captures the exuberance of her performances. A dazzling presence on stage, Fuller became famous in America for her Serpentine Dance (1891). But she received such an adoring reception by the French that she moved to Paris, where she became a regular performer at the Folies Bergère, a famed cabaret. She performed in enormous lengths of fabric that she would send billowing and swirling around her body as she twirled across the stage. The fabric would catch and reflect the multicolored lights she set up, creating a spectacular effect and earning her the nickname, the “Electric Fairy.” Here Larche sculpts Fuller as an almost goddess-like figure, commanding waves of fabric that fly weightlessly above her head and around her lithe body.
