Alvino Bagni Red and Black Lava Table Lamp, Italy 1960s

About the Item

Striking vintage majolica table lamp features modernist, geometric interpretation of Oriental and Chinoiserie style decor, done in textured black lava glaze on Bagni's characteristic bright orange-red background. The ceramic lamp base was converted from the vase; round ebonized wood base and top with stepped carved design and chrome fittings add Art Deco influence to the piece. Wide base offers stability and extra support to a tall, narrow cylindrical body. The ceramic body/vase is signed with model number and "Italy"; using multiple sources we were able to attribute it to one of the less common series that Alvino Bagni created for Raymor in 1960s. The lamp measures 19" to top of socket, 13.25" to top of ceramic, and 25" - to the finial. Alvino Bagni (1919-2000), along with Aldo Londi and Guido Gambone, is considered one of best Italian ceramic designers whose work was imported by Raymor. Bagni worked with Londi at Bitossi for a few years in Florence, Italy before opening his own studio in 1956 in Lastra a Signa, on the outskirts of Florence, called Bagni Ceramiche. His early 1950s work shows influence of Londi, but later his focus shifter to very individualistic styles and forms, with stripes, geometric patterns and bold lava type glazes as some of the more common themes. The vast majority of Bagni’s work was for the U.S. Market, and he establishing privileged relations with a number of important names in American design and business, including Raymor and Rosenthal Netter, for whom he created wide array of extremely modern items for that time. In 1970 the company moved to a larger, more modern factory, where Bagni surrounded himself with highly-skilled collaborators and artists, such as E. Borgini, M. Mannori, R. Buti, M. Santonocito, among many others.

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Table Lamp, Signed, Brown & Red Flower Reliefs
By Raymor, Fratelli Fanciullacci, Rosenthal Netter
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Rare, unusual vintage majolica lamp features abstract graphic decor with large flower motifs, done in relief; the body is mounted on turned solid wood base. The upper part of urn-shaped ceramic body is accentuated with 6 symmetrically placed soft indentations, a common feature for Mid Century Modern glass and ceramic shapes; the strategic placement of the relief elements guides the eye along the complex shape of the lamp. The reliefs are hand-sculpted with light variations in shapes and forms of the leaves and petals and a few visible joint lines, further emphasizing organic, hand-made quality of the lamp. Muted, evocative color palette complements the textured decor and the sculptural body of the lamp without overpowering it. Bordeaux red and teal green glazes are used for the flowers and leaves; the mottled mocha and cappuccino brown background features linear plaid design in the same red color that is used on the relief elements, unifying the colors of the composition. The lamp is signed on the bottom with FF (for the manufacturer, Fratelli Fanciullacci) and ITALY. It is in good, fully operational vintage condition, with the new socket, brass fittings, and wiring. It stands 17" tall to the top of the socket, and 24.5" - to the top of the finial. It is missing an importer sticker; Fratelli Fanciullacci created variety of majolica lamps for various American importers, such as Raymor, Rosenthal Netter, Ebeling Reuss...
