About the Item

The ‘Arc en Ciel’ table lamp was designed by Andrea Bellosi and manufactured by Studio Alchimea in Italy in 1978. Two arch-shaped marble sides frame the piece, anchored by a softly rounded marble base. Suspended at the center is a semi-circular black lacquered metal lampshade, adjustable to cast either a focused or diffused halogen beam. Once lit, the lamp transforms, projecting a radiant spectrum of rainbow hues onto surrounding surfaces. Literature reference: Halogen, p. 92. Founded in Milan by Alessandro Guerriero and Bruno Gregori, Studio Alchimia emerged as a bold counterpoint to Modernism’s austere rationality. Positioned between the avant-garde provocations of radical design and the iconic exuberance of the Memphis Group, Alchimia championed irony and metaphor, reimagining historical archetypes, everyday objects, and kitsch into vibrant, unexpected forms. Their work spanned furniture, fashion, jewelry, and graphic design, with early collections like Bau.Haus Uno and Due showcasing handcrafted reinterpretations of classical styles, elevated through bold color. Collaborations with Zanotta introduced Alchimia’s ethos to industrial production, fusing artistry with accessibility. Among its influential designers were Andrea Branzi, Ettore Sottsass, and Paola Navone, whose contributions cemented Alchimia’s legacy as a pioneer of playful yet provocative design. Great vintage condition, with a patinated finish to the metal shade. This lamp has been professionally rewired for U.S. use by our team of restorationists.
