Articulating Desk Lamp
With Faux Leather Enamel
Circa 1939
At the time of the New York World's Fair of 1939, designers architects and engineers were all inspired to bring about and summon "The Future!" This extremely rare lamp is a great example of the designs, ideas and aesthetic of this momentous period!
Here an articulating brass banded drum shade swivels on a great expansive brass arch! Arches added a sense of drama and importance to an object and were used very successfully in this time period to bring both formality and dynamism to furnishings!
This drum shade beams light where desired and it is covered with an enamel pattern designed to look like leather. This element is very rare and is one of the first industrial age examples of decorating metals and plastics with "natural" patterns. This would become fairly common place decades later as the "wood" trim on cars was decorative plastic and before that, contact paper was introduced to a design conscious public.
At this time, several extremely high end desk lamp designs featured leather wrappings, particularly those coming out of Europe, who were still employing more handmade furnishings. So this design feature was not just a random whim, but an effort to convey "old world" imagery to a very industrialized product.
Now, almost 85 years later, as most leather wrapped lamps of this period are quite deteriorated, while this one prevails, the wisdom of the designers of this lamp is made manifest!
It is truly a spectacular lamp and designs like this just are not forthcoming today and, quite likely, based on corporate and global population changes, will never come again. Light age wear throughout and wear to enamel on base.
With this lamp "The Future" summoned by the NYWF and its optimistic, well designed, human engineered illumination can be yours! This lamp will likely outlast all lamps made today and any made in the past 25 years. Quality of materials, simplicity of engineering and competent construction make all the difference in the world.
An extremely rare, Art Deco period treasure for your NY penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch or New Canaan estate!

(APPROX. 17" TALL By 15" WIDE ) Here is the famous MOSS fiberglass lamp with a cone and reflector design. It is one of the most coveted MOSS lamps for its comparative restraint and timeless design! This reflector lamp is the epitome of modern illumination thought circa 1945-1955! Designers were experimenting with ways to create *indirect lighting* because studies illustrated this was better for the eyes. The MOMA Lighting Design competition of 1951 would almost exclusively showcase designs that were based on reflection technology. This beautiful lamp features a sweeping brushed brass neck and articulating fiberglass shade reflector. The black enameled cone is complemented by a matching black decorative trim on the base. It is in very fine vintage condition. It has light age-appropriate wear. It presents splendidly, This lamp creates a warm cozy space in any interior. Moss lamps were more about mood than function. Accordingly this is more of an accent lamp. Much like the Bobrick control lamps...Category
