Art Déco German Painted Porcelain Foo Dog Perfume Lamp/Incense Burner by Aerozon

About the Item

Art Déco german hand-painted glazed porcelain foo dog perfume lamp/incense burner by Aerozon By: Aerozon Material: porcelain, ceramic, enamel, paint Technique: molded, pressed, enameled, painted, hand-painted, glazed Dimensions: 4 in x 6.5 in x 7.5 in Date: mid-20th century, circa 1940 Style: Art Déco, Mid-Century Modern Place of origin: Germany A 20th century glazed porcelain perfume lamp that embodies the Chinoiserie motifs popularized in German Art Déco. Molded as a chinese guardian lion (or 'foo dog') with head tilted to the heavens, the figurine stands upon its four paws. Its white surface is decorated with multicolored hand-painted floral detailing. As was common with Chinoiserie, the 'foo dog' combines european shapes and bright colors reflective of the era's aesthetics. The hollow vessel, sealed by the removable headpiece, could hold a bulb or fragrant oils, doubling as an incense burner. The maker’s stamp is visible on the belly. Overall a prime example of Art Déco interpretations of ancient Chinese porcelain craftsmanship and iconography.
