About the Item

Mid-Century table lamp, Art Deco lamp, by Aldo Tura, ashtray service cigarettes or centre table, in hand-carved blond walnut. Restored and working. Measures cm: H 28 x W 35 x D 21. Aldo Tura is an Italian designer, who established his furniture manufacturing house in Lombardy in 1939. Working between the trends of Art Deco and modernism, Tura created unique and luxurious furniture and accessories, which were characterized by rich materials, sculptural shapes, and exclusive craft techniques. Tura's work has become highly collectable, especially pieces with exotic finishes, such as goatskin and parchment, in vibrant red, green and yellow palettes. Tura is one of the most outstanding Italian designers of the 1950s. In the postwar years, while many furniture makers were adapting their manufacturing methods to mass production, Tura continued to engage in traditional handcrafted methods. He preferred complex shapes and labour-intensive processes, which could never be replicated in a large-scale production system. As a result, the number of Tura's works available on the market remained limited. Today Tura's company continues to produce luxury furniture in Lombardy, but much information about the artist has been lost over time. The Brooklyn Museum in New York owns several works by Tura, which were originally exhibited in the traveling exhibition "Italy at work: Her Renaissance in Design Today".
