About the Item
Rare, unusual table lamp features disc shaped ceramic base with circular graphic design delineated in black on molded relief on off-white background. The base is mounted on rectangular black metal base with characteristic Art Deco silhouette. The lamp was outfitted with the new premium double cluster and finial in brass; it appears to be rewired recently.
The lamp is signed on the bottom of the ceramic base with the Trenton Potteries Co. star mark, surrounded by "Trenton Potteries Company, Trenton, NJ" script; usually, the numeral inside the star indicates the plant where the ware was produced (as 1, Crescent; 2, Delaware; 3, Empire; 4, Enterprise; 5, Equitable; 6, Ideal), but the opening for the wiring takes out the central part of the star with the number. The script might indicate that the piece is a part of decor line, since the Trent Art China (TAC), a division of Trenton Potteries, used the same script on their vases and other decor items, but with "TAC" replacing the star mark. Due to rarity and uniqueness of the piece, there are not so many examples of this particular mark documented, making the lamp a perfect gift to a collector of American pottery and ceramic, or to a design enthusiast.
Trenton Potteries Company conglomerate was created in 1892 as an amalgam of six earlier firms, the Crescent, Delaware, Empire, Enterprise, Equitable and Ideal Potteries, in Trenton, NJ. While the combined companies concentrated on sanitary ware, they also marketed a line of decorative vases and figures. Large vases created in Trenton sold at Tiffany’s for as much as $1,400 in the early 20th century (about $32,000 in today’s dollars).
In 1904, per invitation from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Trenton Potteries created four ornamental vases, each standing four feet seven inches tall, with the express purpose of showing off the heights America had reached in pottery and to highlight Trenton’s pottery industry in particular; the vases can be seen 4 different museums: the Washington vase - in the New Jersey State Museum, the Grecian vase - in the Newark Museum, the Woodland vase - in Trenton museum, and the Rose vase - in the Brooklyn Museum. The Trenton Potteries Co. sent an exhibit to the Paris Exposition of 1900, which was awarded two gold medals. In 1930s, Trent Art China (TAC), a division of Trenton Potteries, created Circlet series of vases, an iconic example of classic American Art Deco design by G. McStay Jackson (1898-1964), as well as other, less known series of vases and decor objects; Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA) currently has Circlet vase in its collection.
