About the Item

A single large, or oversize, ceramic TOTEM table lamp by Bernard Rooke, England, 1960s. Sculptural piece, made of hand-formed ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta, with a combination of dry and glazed finishes. The lamp is made up of three separate sections, positioned on a central metal tube. The lamp features Rooke's own hierogliphic-style symbols, and the middle section has a small turquoise detail in the centre on both sides. The design is a good example of Rooke's early work; it is a heavy piece and is unsigned. The lamp is in good vintage condition, with flaws - such as cracks, nicks and glaze losses - in line with the rustic hand-making and firing processes. New wiring will be required and we recommend this is carried out locally to install, to make sure it meets your needs and regulations; we recommend a low heat bulb to protect this fixture for the future. We are showing the lamp with its original shade, covered in split cane and complete with duplex shade-carrier. It is unusual to see the original shades - particularly from the early lamps - as they are fragile and rarely survive. This shade is in fair vintage condition, with lots of wear including breaks to the liner and losses to the cane, light dents and distortion to the shape; however for us it has charm and nicely complements the ceramic work. The shade is included free of charge, but the volume impacts shipping, so if you wish to take just the base please let us know. Approximate dimensions: H: 47cm to top of ceramic / 93cm including shade W: 18cm / 36cm at shade D: 12cm at base Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill in south London, sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-fashioned using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
