About the Item

Artist made Bronze lamp attributed Danish Sculptor TH Stein and is made in the 1850’s. The lamp has clear references to both Pompeii and Herculanum. The lamp is made in solid bronze with a beautiful natural patina which the lamp has gotten after many years of use. Theobald Stein was the son of professor of anatomy at the Art Academy Sophus August Vilhelm Stein. Originally, Th. Stein destined to follow the path of the student, but since already in his early boyhood he showed much desire and ability to draw, and since many respected painters and sculptors who visited the Stein home thought that his talent should be encouraged and developed, he was, aged 12, enrolled as a student at the Art Academy's drawing school; He left the Latin school immediately after he had been confirmed at the age of 14, and from that time he put all his energy into becoming an artist. He pursued his studies at the drawing school with the highest degree of interest and conscientiousness; next to that he modeled under medalist and sculptor Christen Christensen and, after the latter had died in 1845, under Herman Wilhelm Bissen; all in all, he made such good progress that he was already able to move up in the academy's Model School in 1846. Two years later he won the small silver medal for a model figure, which together with a portrait bust – the artist's brother – marks his debut as an exhibitor at Charlottenborg; likewise in 1848 the great silver medal was awarded to him, again for a statue after the living model. In 1850, Stein exhibited his first independently composed work of art, the relief Jason Seizing the Golden Skin, while Orpheus and Medea Conjure the Dragon in Sleep, a work which essentially dates from the artist's 18th year, but was later followed in the details. In 1851 he received the Neuhausen Prize for a statue by Holberg (now in the Statens Samling) and the same year the smaller gold medal, for which he had competed unsuccessfully in 1849, for the relief Thetis imploring Vulcan for weapons for Achilles, which, when that year after being exhibited, attracted no little attention, less by virtue of the originality of the composition than by solid modeling and tasteful linework. at all, the aspiring artist was by no means lacking in recognition, and his works mostly found buyers, in 1853 the group The Blind King Oedipus wandering in exile, led by the Daughter Antigone, in 1854 a statuette by Bellman, in 1855 a statue of Johannes Ewald and in 1856 the statue A young girl throwing grain to chickens. Only in one area did his luck fail him, as his attempt to win the big gold medal ran aground several times. But the Academy compensated him in another way; from 1856 it granted him support for several years, which, together with what the sale of his works - including a number of portrait busts - brought him, enabled him to undertake a longer trip abroad, during which he stayed in Rome for four years and produced several of his best works, such as A Young Girl Picking a Star Flower, which, executed in marble, was sold to King Frederik VII, King Skjold as a child, of which a marble copy was also acquired by the king after a plaster cast was purchased for the Art Association's raffle, A Neapolitan Fisherman Playing with Conch Shells (purchased in marble by the Art Association), the large group of Loki and Sigyn (State Collection) and Neapolitan Fisherman carrying a Water Jar, which in 1860 was honored with the exhibition medal. The latter work belongs to the artist's most independent and beautiful, in that, in particular, the movement produced by the boy carrying the jar on his left shoulder and supporting it with his right hand gives it a peculiar grace; a bronze cast of it can be found in the Perchparken facility. Less appealing is the group Loki and Sigyn; the expression of power and wildness that the sculptor has striven to put into it does not seem to have come quite naturally to his mild and quiet artistic personality. The lamp is the perfect detail for a classic Art Deco style of interior or a more modern style of interior or even a more classic antique inspired style of interior. Please note the lamp is sold without the lamp shade.
