Brutalist Brown Stoneware Table Lamp by EGO, Sweden 1960s
About the Item
This mid-century modern brutalist brown stoneware ceramic table lamp by EGO, Sweden is a visually striking table lamp. This ceramic piece exudes organic texture and sculptural presence. The lamp features a bulbous body densely covered in rounded perforations, giving it a tactile, almost coral-like surface. The glaze showcases a rich blend of earthy browns, mossy greens, and creamy whites, creating a naturalistic patina that highlights its hand-crafted appeal.
Mounted on a flared ceramic base in a warm, matte brown finish, the lamp is both rustic and refined. The openwork design allows light to filter through the many circular openings, casting dynamic shadows and creating an atmospheric glow.
Perfect as a functional art piece, this lamp would be an ideal addition to interiors that celebrate artisan craftsmanship and art.
Incised by hand att the bottom of the lamp: "Stengods (means stoneware) EGO ateljé" with the signature "BK" which stands for the cheramic artist Bruno Karlsson. EGO ateljé means that this lamp is a limited edition and a handmade item.
ABOUT EGO
EGO Stengods was founded in 1965 by Gösta Olofsson and German-born artist Willi Fischer. Olofsson, who had worked in sales at both Gustavsberg and Rörstrand, partnered with Fischer, who handled the artistic side of the business. They set up their workshop in Tofta, outside Lidköping, in a former mechanical workshop. With a kiln, a small team, and a shared passion for ceramics, they began producing stoneware lamp bases, candleholders, vases, and animal figures.
Just a year later, Fischer offered to buy out Olofsson, but when the offer was declined, Olofsson instead bought out Fischer and took over the company, renaming it EGO—after his and his wife Elisabeth’s initials. Although Elisabeth was not involved in the business, the name stuck. Fischer was later replaced by artist Heinz Schlichting from Rörstrand, who became EGO’s artistic director and helped define its aesthetic.
The early years were challenging, with financial difficulties and even a kiln explosion. But by the late 1970s, EGO found success and recognition. Gösta Olofsson retired in 1981, handing the company over to his son Anders, who expanded the product line to include ceiling lamps. Unfortunately, EGO filed for bankruptcy in 1987.
Renowned potter Bruno Karlsson joined EGO in 1973, crafting elegant hand-thrown vases in a 1930s/40s style until 1985. His works from EGO are signed “BK.” Gösta Olofsson passed away in 2017 at the age of 95.
