B.T.2/RP Prototype Table Lamps by Duccio Trassinelli

About the Item

A pair of B.T.2/RP prototype table lamps, designed by Duccio Trassinelli in 1972, a founding member of studio A.R.D.I.T.I., produced by Sormani SPA. These lamps were prototypes items to experiment with Trassinelli's innovative technique, which involves a low-voltage current flowing between steel plates through randomly positioned electromagnetic components. Trassinelli included in these prototype a diming feature, to the touch -anywhere on the base- all the bulbs can be dimmed. The components are completely safe to touch, and each methacrylate bulb holder can be positioned anywhere on the rectangular base, including the sides. In 2005, these lamps were restored by Duccio Trassinelli himself and were acquired directly from him. Each lamp comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a copy of the related patent for the mechanism, also issued by the artist. Related works from the artist are part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Lamps are sold separately. Duccio Trassinelli (Born in Florence in 1945) Duccio Trassinelli, born in Florence in 1945, is a distinguished Italian designer. He earned his degree from the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche (ISIA) in Florence, where he later taught Design Methodology for a decade. In 1965, Trassinelli co-founded Studio PENTA, collaborating on innovative projects such as the FRA.BAT, a futuristic racing car unveiled at the 1967 Turin Motor Show. The following year, he established Studio A.R.D.I.T.I., pioneering a collective approach to furniture design. Notable creations from this period include the B.T., Ponte, and Prismar lamps, which are now part of the permanent collections at esteemed institutions like New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Paris's Centre Pompidou, and Germany's Vitra Design Museum. Trassinelli's career spans diverse fields, including plant engineering, prefabricated industries, electronic instrument design, urban furniture, and projects for both public and private entities. He holds numerous invention patents and continues to innovate in lighting design, being among the first to experiment with low-voltage technology. His work is characterized by a commitment to method, pioneering spirit, and a harmonious blend of technical expertise with modern tradition.
