Cantagalli for Ardalt Hand Painted Daliso-Lustro Majolica Table Lamp Italy

About the Item

Rare majolica table lamp was handmade in Italy by Cantagalli for Ardalt Importing. It was hand painted and finished with Cantagalli's renown Daliso Lustro glaze. It is a stunning example of traditional Cantagalli design and exceptional craftsmanship; Cantagalli produced high quality, artisan manufactured reproductions and interpretations of Renaissance Italian Majolica, as well as pieces in the Islamic and Moresque styles. The lamp's design is strongly influenced by historicism and exoticism of Renaissance derivation. Its richly textured shape lends itself to meticulously detailed, colorful decor and luminous, glowing lustre glaze. Ulisse Cantagalli was able to recreate the subtle finish seen on the lustred pottery from Valencia, Gubbia, and Deruta from 16th century, the technique that was considered lost. His early experiments with copper and ruby lustre on plates in Arabic-Moresque were awarded medals at the Milan Exhibition of 1881, and Prince Filangieri, founder of the Artistic Museum in Naples, arranged for lustre pieces to be ordered for his Museum. By 1882 he fully mastered the metallic lustre glazes; his glazed majolica won Gold medals on multiple major exhibitions throughout Europe. After the success of 1888 Italian Exhibition in London his designs were lauded by British collectors and museum curators. In 1890 at Universal Exhibition in Paris the Casa Cantagalli stand, inspired by the Venetian-Gothic, won the commendation of the British Museum. Powerhouse Museum in Sidney, Australia, British Museum, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Glasgow Museum, and Edinburgh Museum have multiple examples of Cantagalli work. Large number of Cantagalli maiolica pieces was made for imports, including imports to United States. The lamp is signed with "Ardalt Italy Daliso Lustro #4821/R" on both parts of the body. It measures 23, 5/8" high to the top of the socket, and 6.7" in diameter at the widest part of the body. The lamp is fully operational and is in good vintage condition.
