About the Item
Stunning Late 1940s–Early 1950s Rock Crystal Specimen Lamp by Carole Stupell
A rare and sculptural table lamp featuring an extraordinary botryoidal crystal specimen, attributed to Carole Stupell, an influential figure in mid-20th-century decorative arts. This example presents what is believed to be a large Prehnite formation, notable for its vibrant green hue and mesmerizing natural texture.
The surface of the crystal forms a botryoidal structure—a natural formation of clustered, rounded segments whose name derives from the Greek bótrus, meaning “a bunch of grapes.” The reverse side is hand-shaped and finished to resemble chiseled stone, adding further artistry and allowing the lamp to be viewed sculpturally from all angles.
Carole Stupell’s work is significant not only for its design sensibility, but for its philosophical underpinning. Much like the Japanese tradition of scholar’s rocks (suiseki), which emphasizes the natural beauty and meditative qualities of stone, Stupell elevated raw geological forms and transformed them into functional decorative objects. By doing so, she bridged naturalism and modernism, offering interiors a sense of earthly serenity and tactile presence—while remaining utterly modern.
Her lamps—often built around agates, quartz, or rare minerals like this—were part of a broader postwar interest in natural materials as luxury, and this piece exemplifies that spirit perfectly.
A functional sculpture, this lamp is ideal for anyone who appreciates the intersection of art, nature, and mid-century design. Specimen lighting of this quality and scale is increasingly rare, and this is an especially fine example.

Table Lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini
By Ugo Zaccagnini
Located in Kilmarnock, VA
A beautifully proportioned and sculptural table lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini, featuring a soft robin’s egg blue crackled glaze with subtle tonal variation and surface depth. The gentle craquelure enhances the organic curves of the ceramic body, lending the lamp a tactile quality and a sense of quiet movement.
The original rosewood cap and base provide a rich material contrast—dark, refined, and architectural against the delicate surface of the glaze. This interplay of texture and tone reflects the studio’s deep sensitivity to form and finish.
Zaccagnini, one of Italy’s most respected 20th-century ceramicists, worked at the intersection of tradition and modernity. Known for his sculptural forms and refined glazes, his work was widely exhibited and retailed through top galleries and luxury decorators in postwar Europe and the United States.
This lamp’s silhouette is bold yet fluid—equally at home in a richly layered interior or a clean-lined, organic modernist space. The cool, pale blue makes it a versatile design element: it can act as a subtle pop of color in a neutral room, or as a cool, calming contrast against deeper hues and dark woods.

JEAN-CHARLES MOREUX
(1889-1956)
French architect and designer Jean-Charles Moreux was born in 1889 at the Chateau de Joncy in Saone-et-Loire. He studied at l’Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris (1914-22) where he spent the period during World War I working on the preservation of works of art. While attending l’Ecole he became friends with the architect Jean Lurcat and his brothers, Andre and Paul Vera.
In 1924 he exhibited his first pieces of furniture at the Salon d’Automne. He had a preference for poetic living spaces and felt that people deserved better than Corbusier’s “machines for living in”. He was anxious to introduce aspects of the marvelous into architecture and living spaces. His creations drew upon the classical, baroque, and rococo styles.
Moreux’s well-known clients included the Baron Robert de Rothschild and Bolette Natanson...
