Made in her family’s hometown of Nove di Bassano (an hour drive from Venice, Italy). Each lamp is unique and the lampshade direction is adjustable. The lamp is made partially using two molds and partially hand modified. The standard lamp uses an off-white semi matte glaze and canvas lampshades. The canvas references Basso Pietrobon's art practice as a painter.
Disclaimer: The project of Break the Mold is about embracing imperfections. Therefore not only will each product be unique and different from each other, but there will also be details allowing one to see the natural material of the ceramic. In addition, all measurements are approximate. Since every lamp is unique it is not possible to offer the exact measurement.
Electrical: Plug options are available for North America or Europe. Please clarify the installation country in the Message Centre. For other countries, the wiring can be modified by a local electrician.
Signature: The bottom of the lamp and vases are hand signed.
Custom: You have the option of customizing the glaze color and lampshade textile, or creating an installation with the Diptych and Triptych concepts (with vases and photography). In addition you can select a double lampshade as seen in the image gallery. Please contact us for more information.
Shipment: The shipment cost offered does not include insurance. If you would like your shipment to include insurance, please contact us.
------
About the artist: After graduating from Columbia University's Masters in Fine Arts program in 2017, Basso Pietrobon moved to her family’s hometown just an hour from Venice. The town of Nove di Bassano has been famous in ceramics for centuries, and this project not only is a tribute to her family’s heritage but also offers part of the proceeds back into her family’s hometown to help the craft of ceramics (more of this story on the storefront).
Project details: Break the Mold is a series of lamps, vases, and photographs which deconstruct and reimagine traditions of craft to produce objects that are novel and beautiful in their imperfection. This project analyzes mass production by using plaster molds which are meant to create repetitive objects into unique one-of-a-kind forms. Basso Pietrobon states, "I hope this work will inspire people to embrace and celebrate their idiosyncrasies, rather than conform their lives to predetermined forms."
The naming concept: The name of each form used for Break the Mold lights, vases and photography are named after the local towns in the area of the ceramic atelier in Nove di Bassano, Veneto, Italy. When two of the same forms are stacked on each other the name will be doubled, for example: 'Cassola+Cassola', however if there is the sphere form and a rectangle form on top, it would be called 'Cassola+Brenta'. The system of making these lamps is sort of like building blocks, using the same forms, modifying them and collaging them in different configurations.

Jenna Basso Pietrobon
Born in 1986, Jenna Basso Pietrobon is an artist who fearlessly explores society through her personal experiences. She received her Masters in Fine Arts at Columbia University in 2017. Her work offers a raw critique of political, economic, and social systems, using a blend of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, psychology, performance, and activism. Break the Mold: Within the world of ceramics, plaster molds are used to make duplicative objects; the molds are vessels which facilitate mass-production and mass-consumption. Her artistic practice turns a critical eye toward this type of rote production, and asks how we can instead turn the molds normally used to make repetitive identical pieces into vehicles for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. Basso Pietrobon explains further, "In the 1950s, my grandparents left Italy for Canada, where my grandfather used his knowledge of ceramics to make lamps. Following his footsteps back to Nove, Italy almost 70 years later, I have returned to my grandfather’s town to likewise produce my own clay forms. Part of the proceeds of the sales will go towards the artisans in the town to help revitalize the craft of ceramics."
