About the Item

French Louis XIV style silvered candlestick by Christofle, converted to a lamp, with a new pleated silk shade. The base of the candlestick is stamped with the shield and rooster mark of the Gallia line of Christofle. There is also a mark with a cat's head (tête de chat) with an initial "C" in each lower corner, an abbreviation for Charles Christofle. Also, the base is stamped "4560." The fairly rare cat head stamp dates the candlestick between the years 1921 and 1931. Christofle developed the Gallia line using a proprietary metal alloy similar to pewter, which was ideally suited for precise casting and plating. Underneath the shield is marked "orfevrie Gallia." The candlestick has been wired for the U.S.
