About the Item

For sale is this wonderfully playful early "Ribbon" Lamp, in matt black, designed by British lighting designer Claire Norcross for Habitat, UK in 2005. The lamp, which is made from a single sheet of galvanised steel, has been ingeniously shaped and folded like a paper ribbon, to create this simple origami-like design. These lamps were sold in two sizes and various finishes, of which this is the smaller. Claire Norcross, who was head of lighting design at Habitat for several years, under the stewardship of Tom Dixon, who was the design director at the time, was responsible for various standout lighting designs, including "Aperture", "Eight Fifty" and this, the "Ribbon" lamp, which received the ‘Best in Lighting’ award from Elle Decoration magazine in 2006. Claire Norcross uses a range of materials and lighting technologies to create designs that are inspired by the natural world. In 2009, she was selected for the prestigious Jerwood Contemporary Makers Exhibition. Sir Terence Conran said of her, "Design Classic’ is an overused phrase in this industry, but I expect it to be associated with the work of Claire Norcross for a long time to come." The lamp is in fair vintage condition, with marks commensurate with age and use (see photos), and is controlled by an in-line on/off switch and is in perfect working order.

Ross Lovegrove D36 “Agaricon” Table Lamp for Luceplan, Italy 1999
By Ross Lovegrove, Luce Plan
Located in London, GB
For sale is an iconic orange D36 “Agaricon” table lamp, designed by Ross Lovegrove in 1999 for LucePlan of Italy. Light and semi-transparent, the Agaricon (Greek for mushroom) is switched on and off by touching an aluminium sensor ring that runs around the outer edge of the lamp's shade. Running the finger along that rim regulates the modulation of light intensity and acts as a dimmer. The body and lid are made of high-pressure injection-moulded polycarbonate. The lamp is in superb vintage condition and in perfect working order. The only issue of note is that two of the three small plastic clips that would have originally secured the top plate to the rest of the lamp are missing. This is only an issue if the lamp is tipped upside down, without holding on to the top, otherwise the plate sits snugly in the base. The Agaricon which is included in Charlotte & Peter Fiell’s book, “1000 Lamps” and featured in many museum design collections is already a lighting classic and makes quite a statement. Ross Lovegrove is one of the world’s most acclaimed and influential designers best known for utilising the latest technology to create futuristic, organic forms; he has applied his signature style to everything – from computers and bicycles to fragrance bottles, chairs to lighting, bathroom sets to speakers, aircraft seats...
