Cold Painted Bronze Lamp with Orientalist Subject by Bergman

About the Item

Cold painted bronze lamp with Orientalist subject by Bergman Austrian, circa 1910 Height 46cm, width 21cm, depth 12.5cm The Bergman Foundry, renowned for its impeccable work in the early 20th-century Viennese art scene, showcases its mastery in this Orientalist bronze lamp, adorned with cold-painting. It's not just a lamp, but a testament to an era and a craft. At the heart of the design, an elegantly posed male Arab figure takes a moment of tranquillity on an integrated prayer rug base. His demeanour, emphasized by crossed legs and a cup gently held in his left hand, breathes life into the scene. An intricately detailed hookah on a nearby table, accompanied by a pot-bearing plate, further punctuates the serene tableau. Above him, a minaret-inspired lamp graces the scene, its delicate moon-shaped trinkets swaying from chains. Suspended from a faux-wooden edifice that replicates the intricate grain and nuances of real wood, the lamp's story is deepened. Adornments of a shield and interlocking rifles hint at tales filled with tradition, and perhaps a hint of adventure. Every aspect of this lamp, from the detailed casting to the rich, nuanced cold painting, showcases the artisan's fervour and dedication. A 'Made in Austria' stamp cements its authenticity, making it more than just a decorative item. Hailing from the legendary Bergman Foundry, its presence is a blend of art, history, and functionality - a centrepiece sure to captivate and ignite conversations.

Viennese Orientalist cold-painted bronze lamp by Bergman Austrian, Early 20th Century Height 19cm, width 23cm, depth 14cm The lamp is superbly made by Franz Xaver Bergman (1961-1936), a renowned Austrian artist known for his Orientalist cold-painted bronze sculptures. Two male figures are depicted in an outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is made from brick walls, bamboo stick construction and various textiles acting as the roof. The brick walls are adorned with hooks on which mugs and jugs hang as well as a wooden shelf with plates. Both figures are dressed in typical Orientalist garments and head coverings. Large Viennese Cold-Painted Bronze Lamp of a Mandolin Player by Bergman
By Franz Xaver Bergman (Bergmann)
Located in London, GB
Large Viennese cold-painted bronze lamp of a mandolin player by Bergman Austrian, c. 1910 Height 39cm, width 15cm, depth 15cm Crafted around 1910 by Franz Xaver Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936), this Orientalist sculptural lamp depicts a young woman playing a mandolin and singing. She is sitting on a green cushioned seat while beneath her feet is a polychrome patterned rug draped on two steps. Dressed in typical Orientalist clothing, her beautifully executed facial expression suggests she is in a joyful mood. Above the main figure is a domed canopy. Its construction includes a pierced window draped by a striped red and gold curtain. A gold shield and a flag also hang on the construction. The domed cover is superbly decorated with trefoil windows filled with coloured glass and is surmounted by a crescent moon which is an important symbol of Islam. A similar motif can also be observed on the flagpole. The lamp is stamped with a ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche, ‘GESCH’ as well as ‘3’. The cold-painting technique has been superbly used to highlight even the smallest details of the scene, such as the patterns on the rug or the texture of the seat. An almost identical example is featured in Joseph Zobel, Antique Vienna Bronzes...
