Colorful Large Midcentury Signed Italian Cylindrical Orange Ceramic Table Lamp

About the Item

A beautiful, large and colorful, signed, midcentury ceramic Italian table lamp in the style of Ugo Zaccagnini. The lamp is signed with initials on the bottom as well as '500 Italy' and 'base lamp'. The cylindrical lamp body is presented in a refreshing color of orange and is capped at both the top and bottom in rings of a light, golden brown and white. The texture of the lamp shows a beautifully modeled surface. For a little bit about Ugo Zaccagnini, I offer this short biography from the AskArt website, "Ugo Zaccagnini (1868 - 1937) was active/lived in Italy. Ugo Zaccagnini is known for Sculpture. Born in Pistoia, the ceramist Ugo Zaccagnini studied at the Scuola di Disegno Industriale in Siesto Fiorentino. Until 1891 he worked as a sculptor and modeler in the Richard-Ginori ceramics factory in Sesto Fiorentino. After that, he worked several years as a freelancer, before in 1896 he started a business with Egisto Fantechi, Luigi Ceccherini, Augusto Fantini, Francesco Grassi, Paolo Banchelli, and Giuseppe Conti. The business was called S.I.F.M.A. and located in Florence. In 1905 he opened his own factory under the name ‘Ugo Zaccagnini e Figli’ with headquarters in Florence, producing ceramics in the traditional and the Liberty style. In the years that followed his five children joined the company." While the company went through various iterations, they are well known for the table lamp bases produced during the 1940s and 1950s. The height to the top of the lamp base is 18 inches. This lamp retains the original wiring.

  • Alfano Dardari Large Midcentury Trompe L’oeil Still Life Oil Painting Framed
    Located in Atlanta, GA
A stunning trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) mid 20th century Italian oil painting by artist Alfano Dardari. This work depicts the after effects of a late night. Gambling. Drinking. Smoking. Vice. And do you see a thread through all of this? I do. Mind you, it's my opinion but I'll happily share it with you. Memento Mori. Instead of defining it for you, I'll offer this description from the Tate in London: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers. Closely related to the memento mori picture is the vanitas still life. In addition to the symbols of mortality these may include other symbols such as musical instruments, wine and books to remind us explicitly of the vanity (in the sense of worthlessness) of worldly pleasures and goods. The term originally comes from the opening lines of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible: ‘Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity...
