About the Item
A striking custom ordered extra large lamp with custom glaze mid-1950s Design Technics ceramic lamp, notable for its planetary, striated glaze that wraps the form in shifting bands of mineral green, sand, smoke, and rust. At 15 inches in diameter and 17.5 inches tall, the piece presents as a sculptural sphere-monumental yet quiet, atmospheric yet grounded.
The glaze is classic Design Technics: layered, atmospheric, and textural, achieved through repeated firings and mineral washes that allowed the clay and the oxides to determine the final "landscape" of the surface. The result feels almost geological, like cross-sections of sediment or the swirling surface of a distant planet.
Maker: Design Technics
Founded in 1947 by Lee Rosen, with collaborations from his wife Edith Rosen and several notable studio potters, Design Technics became one of the most respected American ceramic workshops of the postwar period. Their lamps bridged craft and modernist architecture-sleek silhouettes, experimental glazes, and a scale meant to anchor contemporary rooms.
Due to the large diameter of this lamp it will have to be shipped through a white glove type of service, it would not make it being shipped UPS or FED-EX.
