About the Item

This bold and vivid lamp from the late 1920s captures a phenomenon that started in the late 19th century and continued into the Art Deco period -- female figures dancing with flowing veils and fluttering fabrics. Loïe Fuller began the trend in the 1890s and early 1900s, and later Ruth St. Denis danced with veils and diaphanous fabrics in America. Here, the body of the lamp -- produced by Muncie pottery in Indiana -- shows a frieze of nude female figures, bathed in terra cotta and green-blue glazes. What makes this lamp extraordinary is its shade, composed of copper mesh painted in a brilliant palette of terra cotta, pumpkin, blue green and grey-purple -- a unique shade that was clearly made for this lamp. Other artists and makers such as Louis Comfort Tiffany made lamp shades using this kind of copper mesh, but they are rare. The lamp base was designed by Reuben Haley, an extraordinary figure in American decorative arts, who attended the famed 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris and brought Cubism and modern stylization back to America. Haley is best known for creating a line of Cubist glass pieces dubbed "Ruba Rombic" for Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company, and later for Muncie, but he also designed a number of other Art Deco pieces such as this lamp.
