About Gerd Hiort Petersen:
Gerd Hiort Petersen (b. 1937) is a celebrated Danish ceramic artist whose work bridges sculptural form and richly symbolic surface decoration. Born in Rønne on the island of Bornholm, she began her artistic training as an apprentice at Michael Andersen & Søn (1954–56), followed by studies at the Akademie für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna (1956–57). She later worked at Søholm Keramikfabrik (1960–61) before completing her education at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen (1961–65). From 1965 to 1973, she was part of the artistic team at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory.
In 1973, Hiort Petersen established her own studio in Rø, Bornholm, together with ceramist Hans Munck Andersen. That same year, she received first prize at the II International Exhibition of Ceramics in Gdansk and was awarded a working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation (1973–78).
Her highly personal style combines Nordic mythology, nature motifs, and existential themes in hand-decorated stoneware and porcelain. Hiort Petersen’s works are held in major museum collections across Europe and have played a significant role in defining Bornholm’s reputation as a center for contemporary ceramics.
